Festival of the Snakes (Panagia Fidiotissa) — annual, approx August 6–15 in Markopoulo, Kefalonia. Famous panigiri where small harmless 'snakes of the Virgin', bearing cross-shaped markings, appear in and around the church each August; believed to bring blessings. Liturgy, music and village celebration.
